Preserve your memories in the BPL Memory Lab! The BPL Memory Lab is available by appointment and can be used to convert many different types of media such as film negatives and cassette tapes to easy to play and store media such as jpg and mp4 files. Email refdesk@billingsmt.gov for more information. 

 Reservations must be made 24 hours in advance of the desired time, and must begin before 5:00 pm on weekdays or 3:00 pm on Saturdays. Requests submitted on Saturday/Sunday or holidays will be addressed the next business day. To reserve the room, click here.

What's in the lab?

CZCZUR scanner 2UR Scanner

The CZUR Scanner is an overhead device that can be used to scan oversized documents or capture images from bound books. 


Epson ScannerEpson V850 ProScanner

Best for scanning slides, photographs, and film negatives to create high-resolution images.  This scanner can also be used in the traditional way, to scan a single-page document, or the hood can be removed to scan a bulky item, like a book.



Video2Digital Converter 2.0VHS Converter

Transfer your home videos to digital format with the touch of a button. Once digitized, videos can be watched on computers, tablets, smartphones, and TVs.  



Super Cassette Capture

The Super USB Cassette Capture converts audio cassettes into MP3 files using Audacity software.


Kodak ScanzaKodak Scanza

The Kodak Scanza processes various types of film negatives and slides into fully developed pictures that can be printed or saved digitally.

Wolverine 8mm Pro

The Wolverine Pro is used to digitize 8mm and Super 8 movie reels.


Guidelines for Use

  • Room must be reserved at least 24 hours before intended use. Reservations may be made by filling out the Memory Lab request form.   
  • Upon receiving a Memory Lab request, a staff member will be assigned to the appointment, and will contact the patron to make arrangements.  Please bear in mind that, while we will make every effort to accommodate your preferred reservation time, staffing concerns or existing reservations may mean that we will have to use the alternate date that you will give us as part of the request form. 
  • Appointment start times must begin between the hours of 10:00 am - 5:00 pm, Tuesday through Friday, & 9:00 am - 3:00 pm on Saturday.
  • Only one piece of equipment may be used at one time. Staff will set up and take down equipment for user.
  • Memory Lab patrons will check in with a BPL Librarian at the 2nd floor Help Desk.
  • A valid library card AND a photo ID must be presented at the time of check-in.
  • Users must be 18 years or older and have a card in good standing with no fees. 
  • Borrowers must read, understand, and sign the use agreement form each time they use the room.
  • Copyright materials cannot be reproduced. Patron is responsible for any infringement of copyright law.
  • The patron must check out at the 2nd floor Help Desk upon completion of the reservation.
